We have been using ammoniacal silverstains for analysis of most of 
our gels.  The procedure of Switzer et al.  (Anal.  Biochem 98, 231-
237) works well but a much simplified and cheaper procedure by Oakley 
et al.  (Anal.  Biochem., in press) is easier to use.  (We will send a 
protocol on request if this paper is not yet out).  In our hands, the 
stain is about 50-fold more sensitive than Coomassie blue.  Less than 
1ng of protein can be easily detected.
