We have been using ammoniacal silverstains for analysis of most of our gels. The procedure of Switzer et al. (Anal. Biochem 98, 231- 237) works well but a much simplified and cheaper procedure by Oakley et al. (Anal. Biochem., in press) is easier to use. (We will send a protocol on request if this paper is not yet out). In our hands, the stain is about 50-fold more sensitive than Coomassie blue. Less than 1ng of protein can be easily detected.
