The flu-1 mutants (previously denoted fl-I, M.G.G. 135 39-44) of C.
elegans which have a bright autofluorescence of the gut were thought
to have much reduced kynurenine hydroxylase activity.
The kynurenine hydroxylase activity in the crude extracts of 5
alleles of flu-1 mutant have been measured and found to be less than
7% of the specific activity of N2. This activity cosediments with
succinic dehydrogenase activity in equilibrium sucrose density
centrifugation. This suggests that kynurenine hydroxylase activity is
associated with mitochondria.
